સમાજ એટલે પરસ્પર સમાન પરંતુ અન્યોથી વિશિષ્ટ સંસ્કૃતિ ધરાવતા, નિશ્ચિત ભૌગોલિક વિસ્તારમાં રહેતા, એકતાની લાગણી ધરાવતા અને પોતાને બીજાથી અલગ માનતા એક જૂથના લોકો. માનવીની જરૂરિયાતો પૂરી કરવા માટે પાયાની તમામ સંસ્થાઓ સમાજ ધરાવતો હોય છે.
સમાજ અને વ્યક્તિ
સમાજની પ્રત્યેક વ્યક્તિઓ સમાજને અસર કરે છે. પરંતુ કેટલીક વિશિષ્ટ વ્યક્તિઓની સમાજ ઉપર વિશેષ અસરો હોય છે. આવી વ્યક્તિઓની વિચારસરણીથી સમાજને દિશાસૂચન મળે છે. ગાંધીજી, રાજા રામમોહનરાય, ઇશ્વરચંદ્ર વિદ્યાસાગર, સ્વામી વિવેકાનંદ વગેરે લોકોએ સમાજમાંથી અંધશ્રદ્ધાઓ, કુરિવાજો, વહેમો અને ખોટી માન્યતાઓને દૂર કરવામાં ફાળો આપ્યો છે અને સમાજને સુવ્યવસ્થિત બનાવવાનો પ્રયત્ન કર્યો છે. આથી આવી વિશિષ્ટ વ્યક્તિઓના વિચારોને સમાજના લોકો સ્વિકારે છે અને અપનાવે છે.
સમાજમાં કૌટુંબિક, આર્થિક, સામાજિક, સાંસ્કૃતિક, ધાર્મિક અને રાજકીય — એમ કુલ છ પ્રકારનાં જુદાં જુદાં જૂથો અને તેના વિભાગો અનિવાર્ય રીતે જોવા મળે છે. તેમજ સમાજમાં સાતત્ય અને પરિવર્તન જેવી પ્રક્રિયાઓ પણ અનિવાર્ય રીતે જોવા મળે છે.
સમાજ સ્વયં એક એકમ છે. તે બીજા કોઈ સમૂહનો પેટા સમૂહ નથી, એટલે કે સમાજ એક વિશાળ અને સમગ્ર એકમ છે કે જે અનેક સમૂહો અને સામાજિક સંબંધોનો બનેલો હોય છે. સમાજના સભ્યો ચોક્કસ ભૌગોલિક વિસ્તારમાં સહિયારુ જીવન જીવે છે. સભ્યો પરસ્પર કાર્યવિભાજન દ્વારા એકબીજાની જરૂરિયાતોને સંતોષે છે. તેથી તેઓ પરસ્પર અવલંબન ધરાવતા હોય છે.
વિશિષ્ટ સંસ્કૃતિ
દરેક સમાજને તેની વિશિષ્ટ સંસ્કૃતિ હોય છે, જે અન્ય સમાજની સરખામણીમાં અલગ પડતી હોય છે. દરેક સમાજ જે સમયમાંથી પસાર થયો હોય તેના આધારે મેળવેલ અનુભવોના આધારે સંસ્કૃતિ ધારવતો હોય છે. આ સંસ્કૃતિના મૂલ્યોના આધારે જ તેનું અસ્તિત્વ ટકી રહે છે. કારણ કે સંસ્કૃતિનાં મૂલ્યોની સાથે સમાજના લોકોના વર્તન-વ્યવહારને સરખાવવામાં આવે છે. તેથી સંસ્કૃતિને એક માપદંડ માનવામાં આવે છે.
સર્વગ્રાહિતા
દરેક સમાજ પોતાની આત્મનિર્ભરતા, અસ્તિત્વ અને વ્યવસ્થા માટે સમાજનાં ધોરણો, મૂલ્યો અને રિવાજો રચે છે. જે સમાજના દરેક સભ્યોએ ગ્રાહ્ય કરવા પડે છે. આથી સમાજ પાસે એક એવી સત્તા હોય છે કે જેનાથી પોતાના સભ્યોની જરીરિયાતો પૂરી કરી શકે છે, તેમજ લોકોનાં વર્તનને અમુક દિશામાં લઈ જઈ શકે છે. જેમ કે, દરેક સમાજમાં લોકરીતિઓ હોય છે. ભલે તે અનૌપચારિક હોય પરંતુ સમાજના સભ્યોએ તેને અનુરૂપ વર્તન કરવું જ પડે છે. સમાજ પોતે જ એક એકમ છે તેથી તેને અન્ય સમાજો ઉપર આધાર રાખવો પડતો નથી કે અન્ય સમાજોની અંધાધૂંધી કે અવ્યવસ્થાને સહન કરવી પડતી નથી. આમ દરેક સમાજ પોતાની જાતે જ સર્વગ્રાહ્યતા ધારાવતો હોય છે.
સ્વ-સાતત્ય
સમાજના સાતત્ય માટે સમાજમાં સ્વયં નવા સભ્યોની ભરતી થતી જ રહે છે. સમાજમાન્ય લગ્નસંસ્થા દ્વારા, પ્રજોત્પત્તિ દ્વારા નવા સભ્યોના સામાજિકરણ દ્વારા સમાજનું વિસ્તરણ થયા કરે છે. તેમજ સમાજમાં અન્ય સમાજમાંથી લોકોનું સ્થળાંતર ચાલ્યા જ કરતું હોય છે. તેથી સમાજ પોતાની જાતે જ પોતાનું સાતત્ય જાળવી રાખે છે.
